Metadata is data about data. Wikipedia defines it as “data providing information one or more aspects of the data”.

We can understand this as contextual information that makes it easier for us to understand and interpret our digital files in the future, that documents the chain of custody and make our datasets much more accessible through richer searches.

piqlConnect has been created to be very flexible when it comes to metadata, we can create any schema you would like and help you import data from any source you would need.

Currently, based on our international experience with data archiving we offer a set of pre-defined schemas in piqlConnect. They can be found under “From Piql” under ‘Metadata’ in Settings.

Dublin Core: Dublin Core is an international recognized schema and metadata vocabulary to describe any kind of resource (and this context a digital object).

Originally, it was used to describe web content in the early days of World Wide Web and has been developed into the Dublin Core Metadata Terms (DCMT) by national and regional archives for describing archival content. Since 2008 it has been described as a Resource Description Framework (RDF).

The original schema developed consisted of 15 different fields of information, and this is known as Dublin Core Simple.

To dive into the meaning of the different fields of Dublin Core you can have a look at this sub-article: Dublin Core Simple schema

! This is the schema that we use as the Standard schema in piqlConnect.

ISAD(G): ISAD(G) (General International Standard Archival Description) defines according to International Council of Archives (ICA) the standard to register archival documents produced by corporations, persons and families. It defines a list of elements and rules for the description of archives and describes the kinds of information that must and should be included in such descriptions.

For more information on ISAD(G) you can have a look at our sub-article: ISAD(G)

! This schema is presented as a preset schema found under “Custom” - needs to be selected before it can be used.

Embedded metadata: Embedded metadata is an algorithm that extracts information from the files upon upload and gives insight to the technical metadata embedded in the files. The algorithm is flexible and adjust depending on the file format and the information embedded in the file. This information can be found under the “Embedded” pane in the Metadata on file level, and increase the amount of searchable contextual data you have for any digital object.
